The river Daugava/Zapadnaya Dvina is a transboundary river shared by Russia, Belarus and Latvia.
The three countries take part in the Daugava/Zapadnaya Dvina
Co-operation Initiative. The Initiative is supported by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency as a part of their Swedish Transboundary Water
Programme.
During 1998 a Working Group with
representatives from the three countries will elaborate an assessment report
including a State of the Environment section, and concrete proposals for follow-up actions. In support of this work, Swedish EPA sponsored a small GIS activity.
The main objective was to produce a small series of pertinent maps for the assessment report, but also to initiate co-operation on a very concrete level. Facilitated by UNEP/GRID-Arendal, a workshop was held with six GIS, cartographical and environmental experts; two from each country, and the DZD Working Group co-ordinator Dr Czeslav Romanovskiy, Belarus, in Arendal, Norway, in August 1998. During a period of 9 work days this produced six relevant maps, which are offered here. The main data sources for the maps were Bartholomews Euromaps on CD-ROM,
the Gulf of Riga Project GIS database, and national data sets from Belarus and Latvia.
Currently, these maps are offered as PDF files only. You will need an Adobe Acrobat Reader Plug-in to view the maps on the screen or to print out. NB. Be aware of large file sizes. A future ambition is also to offer the maps as GIF files, as well as some of the basic GIS data sets not subject to copy-right. |
